Fallout 4 is an RPG (role-playing game) developed in 2015 by Bethesda Game Studios. It is the fourth main game in the Fallout series, and is an open world post apocalyptic environment with the aesthetic of the fashions and styles of the sixties, set in the year 2287, and heavily reliant on futuristic technologies like robot servants and power armor–all inlaid upon the backdrop of Boston, Massachusetts, aka “The Commonwealth.”
An open map game is a game without a set playthrough order, instead of regular gameplay with a more structured or linear gameplay. Some other notable open world games include Minecraft, The Legend of Zelda, Far Cry, and Skyrim. Free-roaming worlds like this allow for players to choose their own goals, playing styles, allies, and objectives. Players can follow suggested objectives, roam the map without a destination in mind, and choose which factions to take missions from; player motivation can stem from the character’s main goals, money, trade, settlement building, character reputation, etc. See structure for more about the nature of open map games.
The player character has one main motivation, which the player only has to pursue if they want to have an eventual ending to the game. The Sole Survivor (the MC) emerges from a cryogenic-induced stasis 210 years after the nuclear war that created the game’s wasteland, and sets out to find her kidnapped son. Beyond this goal, the player is encouraged by the game to explore, make friends and take missions from non-player characters, and eventually choose a faction to work with.
The nature of this game allows for four different main endings, with exception to a few minor things. Beyond this, depending on the progress and level of the player–as well as their decisions throughout the game–the world that the player leaves behind is wholly different from how the story began. See variability for more about this.
