The message of a piece of media is most important in understanding the author's choices and purpose, as well as the influence of the media on its audience. Because of the multifaceted and fluid nature of Fallout 4, it is hard to pen down just one message or theme; every quest has a distinct topic and tone, and those intended messages change depending on the player and their choices. Multimodality and the functions of new media help to convey these messages in a way that allows players to learn and understand themes through experience and active choice. The player grows familiar with the world inside the game–more connected to the plights of their character and the NPCS–and is then more emotionally involved in the story, its themes, and its outcome. In a way, they are living through the effects of the apocalypse and learning first-hand the impact of their decisions.
